What Are The Benefits Of Patio Doors?

  • Patio area at the back of a newly refurbished terraced house

Better Views Of Your Outdoor Space

Patio doors are renowned for having very slim sightlines, meaning you have less frame and more glass to appreciate an unobstructed view of your garden orother outdoor area. Also, you can maximise the amount of natural light that is able to flow into your home through your doors.

  • Backyard Patio Area

Ideal For Parties Or Outdoor Gatherings

Patio doors are the perfect summertime feature, whether you are barbequing with your family or enjoying the sunshine with your friends. The sliding mechanism provides the convenience of an open door, making moving between inside and outside almost effortless.

  • Increase The Value Of Your Home

Even if you don’t have any immediate plansto sell your home in the near future, making it more desirable and attractive to potential buyers is always a good thing. High-quality patio doors, particularly combined with a well-designed decking area, are an ideal investment to add a modern feel to your home.

  • High Security

The amount of glass in patio doors might at first make it seem like they are not secure, but they actually provide a high standard of security and safety features to give you full peace of mind. Toughened or laminated glass combines both multipoint locks and steel reinforced frames to offer unparalleled security. Anti-lift blocks are also fitted as standard, while anti-pick cylinder locks are also available if required. It all adds up to a patio door that is totally secure and keeps your home safe from unwanted intruders.

With our patio doors all they will require is the occasional wipe with a sponge and warm soapy water and they will keep looking as good as new for years to come.

Composite Doors FAQ’s

French doors are installed as a pair & fitted onto hinges which enable them to open outwards or inwards. Patio doors are more of a catch-all term that refers to any set of doors that open directly onto a paved area. This means patio doors can include entries that open with a slide, whereas French doors do not.

In order to ensure a good fit for your new uPVC door, it is essential to have the doorway accurately measured by our installers. There are many factors to think of when measuring, and you need to get the height and width from the outside opening correct; you also need to take into account the thickness of the plaster & the floor height too. For glazed rear doors, including French Doors getting the right size is essential to be certain that the doors open & close correctly and provide access.

There are multiple options available when it comes to patio doors and the one that will be right for you will depend on different factors including your personal preference and the style of your home.

uPVC
uPVC has changed a lot over the years and technological advancements in the industry have seen it become a popular material for many homeowners. This is because it provides a more affordable alternative than other materials, but you can get an expensive looking finish that could give the appearance of timber, for example, without the demanding maintenance requirements of wood. Also, you won’t have to compromise on security when choosing uPVC as our high-quality locking and safety features can work with any material to provide maximum protection for your home.

Aluminium
Aluminium has become commonly used in more modern homes thanks to sleek, contemporary appearance, but it can be complementary in a more traditional home too. Despite not being thermally efficient in the past due to aluminium being a conductive metal, advancements over time have helped the development of thermally broken frames and finishes that ensure good levels of energy efficiency in aluminium doors.

In most cases installing new patio doors or changing old ones for new comes under permitted development (PD), so there would be no need to apply for planning permission. However, if you live in a designated area, like a Conservation Area or in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty then you should check with your local authority as restrictions could apply. Also, if you live in a listed building, you will need to get listed building consent before you make any changes.

Sliding patio doors are installed by parallel tracks being fitted into the base and top of the opening so the doors are supported. One pane slides behind the other and floor-mounted tracks take the weight. You can decide whether the leaves of the doors are stacked inside or outside.

A level threshold is when the top of the floor track is at the same level as the floor and so internal and external floor levels are kept the same. This has a striking appearance and is beneficial from an access perspective, but care needs to be taken to make sure the whole thing stays watertight.

It is essential to incorporate appropriate drainage facilities. Also, it will be necessary for the external floor to gradually slope away from the threshold so that water does not pool in front of the doors. If you are worried about a level threshold but you like the look of them, you may want to consider building up the external floor using timber decking or similar until it is level with the internal floor and maintain a 75mm or more upstand to protect against possible water ingress.

The choice between a folding door or a sliding door will be based on your home and your needs. As a rough guide, if you have a large garden, countryside views, or just want the best possible visual clarity out of your doors, sliding doors would be preferable because they won’t have as much frame visible. Folding doors might be the better choice if you have a smaller space and want to connect the inside of your home to this space better. Sliding doors will provide you with bigger glass panels, better views, better light transmission, and is the perfect product for generating the desirable ‘glass wall’, making them popular with modern extensions.

Sliding patio doors are a very versatile option that can suit both contemporary properties and more traditional homes. So, you will be able to find the right type of patio doors in Scotland for your style of property from Clydebuilt Home Improvements.
