    Tilt & Turn Windows FAQ’s

Tilt & turn windows have a single handle to give you two versatile window positions. Turn the handle 180 degrees to tilt the window inwards to allow ventilation through the top of the window – providing airflow even when it is raining – or turn the handle 90 degrees to fully open the side hinge for cleaning, extra ventilation or as an emergency escape route.

    Tilts for secure ventilation

The window works by tilting inwards from the bottom hinges, providing you with simple and safe ventilation in your home. You can alter the opening with a choice of four different ventilation positions, which are all kept in place with a tilt restrictor. This ensures the security of your home is never left vulnerable.

    Wide opening for easy cleaning

Tilt and turn windows are ideal for easy maintenance because the window can open inwards from the side hinges. This means you can clean the outside from inside your home. In particular this is useful when windows are above the ground floor as no leaning out or ladders are needed. As well as this the wide opening means the window can be used as an emergency exit which is an important feature.

    Better air seals

The performance of a tilt and turn window is one of the less well-known ways that it is superior to the competition. Higher quality air seals create a tighter seal and lead to an air-tight window. Tilt and turn windows usually have better air-seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames.

As a result, they are less prone to leaking water and cold draughts, and you will be able to keep more of your heating indoors where it should be. Windows that are well insulated should mean you won’t have to use as much heating and therefore you will save money on your energy bills.

    Perfect for small spaces

The flexibility of tilt and turn windows means that if you want to be able to open a window in a smaller room for ventilation (like a bathroom) you can do it without having a big window swinging back into the room.

Tilt and turn windows open inwards for improved ventilation & safety. It also allows for easy cleaning of your windows from inside your home, without having to lean out of the window.

Tilt & turn windows are considered more secure than other window styles due to the window able to move in two directions and its robust hardware & multiple locking points. The hinges of the window swing inwards; this means the window cannot be pulled open from the outside. In the tilt position, the window can remain locked in place slightly open, making it difficult to force it open.

Tilt and turn windows open inwards to enable flexible ventilation. With this style, you don’t have to have the window completely open to let air into your home. Slightly opening it, tilting into the room, gives you the required airflow but with the added benefit of security. Also, you can have the window open when it is raining without the risk of rain getting into your property.

If you live in a listed building you might find that you are unable to make changes that will adjust the exterior look and fabric of the building. It is important to check with your local authority before getting tilt and turn windows in Scotland to prevent any expensive mistakes.
